Update: Obama may or may not attend Chelsea Clinton wedding in Rhinebeck. Maybe.

White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs was asked on Wednesday if President Barack Obama attending Chelsea Clinton’s wedding, which has been reported to take place in Rhinebeck on July 31.

His response?

“Not that I’m aware of.”

Translation?

“Keep guessing, suckers!”

Also, a little lesson about how news spread on the Internets: Even though there are multiple reports about the Obama attending the wedding, all of them – from CBS to Radar to NBC, etc – quote the Hudson Valley News. All others quote Radar or NBC or CBS. Rinse and repeat.

Gibbs’ statement is public record.

Regardless, Rhinebeck’s going to be a madhouse on July 31. We’ll be there.

In terms of how news spreads on the Internet, how come local publications (Freeman included) failed to acknowledge that the Hudson Valley News broke this wedding story in first place? In fact, I don't think any other local pubs noted the actual source of this news. In contrast, national media outlets were crediting Hudson Valley News left and right. Are local news media that insecure that they can't give a little, start-up paper some credit?

Good question! The Freeman, and I believe the Times Herald Journal Others, used the Associated Press story, which quoted the New York Post. Neither the White House or the Astor House will confirm publicly or return calls in case of the Clinton camp.I checked the Post story. I quoted the weekly. As I said, rinse and repeat. The noble me also wants to say give credit where credit's due. The more cynical me says there's no need to hammer people in the head about how you were scooped. But I don't run the news department, so I can't speak for it.
